This dark, most unusual hallway keeps moving us at a brisk pace. At one point, spears shoot out from the walls – a low and a high set. The low are first, and catch me off guard, and hit me. I recall the wisdom from unknown sage from a distant past, and avoid being hit a second time. That wisdom?
“Only the penitent man will pass.”
The end of the hallway quickly approaches but thankfully the wall it brings it to is in disrepair and there’s a hole in wall which we jump though. On the other side of the wall? The rest of the party. At the end our our new hallway is a door with a demonic face that quickly focuses on Kali and says “Say the password and you may go.”
Without hesitation, I say “the password” and it opens.
This opens up to an odd hallway with lowered spikes in the center of the room, and what appears to be a walkable edge on the sides. It seems like a trap, so I detect magic – I’m picking up a lot of illusory magic. I close my eyes and concentrate, and when I open them, see the room for what it really is – there are spikes with a coating of a (most likely poisonous) green gel on the ceiling. The floor spikes aren’t real. There’s a pressure plate on the far wall. I hit it with a magic missile, and the door next to it opens. We carefully walk along the edge of the “pit” on the ledge.
We come across another similar room and Firfus flies across, followed closely by Kali. Not gifted with flight, I get Kali to fly back, and I hop in my own bag of holding. He flies us across.
And, this new hallway, unlike the others, ends a T. Carved into a door at one end is the word “hoover” in Thassilonian. Behind the door at other end lies a pile of gold, which Firfus says is fake. I don’t think anyone’s surprised. Behind the “hoover” door, there’s a pole with runes inscribed on it. Upon closer inspection, the runes say something in elvish about a “lesser staff of wise man”.
At Ikniq’s suggestion, I step out of the small room and mage hand the staff. It holds for a minute, then pops free. The ceiling collapses and the whole complex shakes, but I have the staff. It’s not magical, but it is masterwork.
Walking down the hallway towards the other doors, tapping the walls as I go with my new staff. I hear a funny spot and find secret door. Ikniq uses the open/close spell and opens it. Behind the door is a huge room bisected by a narrow wooden bridge suspended over a waxy, greasy pit. In the middle of the room on the bridge stands what appears to be a stone golem.
I cast disintegrate, and hit it hard. It attacks Kali who is flying above it, and it hits, making sparks. Is this a flint golem or something? Realizing the powder-keg that is this room, Kali instead ropes it and drags it into pit. We cross, not on fire.
We come to a pit room again. This one also features a 5 ft ledge, but instead of a pit filled with spikes, it’s a pit filled with huge spiders. Fantastic.
Kali bag flies me over. Ikniq though, he wants to walk the ledge. He slips, but recovers and proceeds to levitate/hover along the wall. We’re met on the other side by a spiral staircase, so we go up to find a door at top. At this point we should just assume everything is a trap. But we don’t. The steps of the stairs angle and make a slide. I slide down into pit. Of huge spiders. I luckily land on one instead of his bitey mouth. I waste no time and hit them with burning scorching ray. I know I could have just teleported out, but sometimes you just want to burn things. Evil things. Kali joins me – he always likes a fight.
I get bit by one and decide to go invisible. One is killed by Kali and another one wraps me up, but I give him a dose of my elemental ray.
We go back up, and through the opened door to find a chasm. The room is ~120ft long, and we can’t see the sides. Running through the middle is a 10ft wide bridge made of metal planks and a railing. It’s suspended by wires from somewhere up above, and there’s a door at the other side. There’s a questionable section about 20ft long in middle.
After checking some things out, we just decide to fly across, not touching the bridge. We come to large, ornate doors. They have a simple keyhole. Ikniq can see through the keyhole, so he dimensions doors himself to the other side and opens it.
We’re back in the odd forest, just on other side of the cairn. I go back around to the front and get on my horse.
We continue down the road, and the sky and plasma are shifting from reds to violets and purple. Winds are picking up, and I hearing moaning from beyond the path. I can’t really make out much, but I recognize a whispering on the winds, in Thassilonian. The trees start whipping around, and we get frightened. We run, and I’m almost hit by a tentacle. What sort of accursed place is this? The wind is now howling and sky is now an acid green. The ground is getting rough and there’s now a slimy green sleet falling. Moving slowly and feeling disoriented, we drop everything.
We’re at Sandpoint.
