We plot our course to Mars. Looks like we’ll have 4-5 days to kill. I get an early start on biding my time by reading two dossiers that were also on that memory chip.
The first is on Ki’ki, and is color/security coded “deep ultraviolet” – whatever that means. Apparently Ki’ki is to be apprehended or terminated, and is considered to be armed and dangerous. Nooooo shit. Or maybe they mean that her arms are dangerous? Six of one… Either way, she apparently must not reach Mars’ surface as she’s entering her egg laying cycle. No wonder Ki’ki seems antsy.
The other dossier is predictably on Leya Bogana. Her color is “Ultra Grey”. Ultra Gray? How is that a color? Why not just go with “Indecisive Black” or perhaps “Resolute Orange” (also known in some circles as Sheepknuckle)? Whatever. Anyways, the orders for her are only to apprehend. Apparently she was a Deimos Rising Rehabilitation Complex contractor. And … she was infected with a parasite? A biohazard threat? We still have her head in a fridge somewhere … we should definitely check on that.
This being Kavita’s area of expertise (and kinda fault? I mean not the biohazard threat, the keeping the damn head thing), she checks out the head of Leyana Bogana. I have to say, I’m impressed though. She masterfully carves into it. Nothing seems weird, that is until we get inside the skull. There are these weird, black, (presumably) dead tendrils inside the skull, weaving into brain. Yeah, whatever it is is dead and decaying fast, decaying before our very eyes. Her brain also looks decayed, we’d guess that Leya was naturally dying anyways. Could this thing be some sort of symbiote, perhaps? Both clinging onto life through the other?
Well, we don’t have long to contemplate this as three ships have changed their course. One of them is even matching our course. Seeing as we’re in the middle of nowhere, we decide to do a scan. Two are from the Sol Defense Force. Crap. And the one that is matching us is an Ares Marshal. Double crap. It looks like it will intercept in ~52 hours.
I disable the transponder while we work on options. iZac looks for a Marshal unfriendly group around Saturn and finds one – the “Sons of Hera” – a spacebiker gang that they consider to be a terrorist group. Perfect? Rumor has it that they’ve pulled an asteroid into the far orbit of Jupiter and that’s their base.
Oh, and they’ve carved it to look like giant skull. Kit-Kaaat has some concerns, but we’re not sure we have a better option.
At this point, they’re kind of our best option, so we plot out a sort of two bank rail shot – use Saturn’s gravity well to slingshot us to Jupiter. Total trip time: ~16 hours.
Once iZac tells us that he’s nailed the slingshot, we put on our spacesuits and go cold. Ki’ki hibernates. After a while, the ship jerks and throws us all hard to port. It’s like we’re in a spin – it’s hard to get up. So I stay put while Silas and Kit-Kaaat head to engineering to jump-start the boot up process. With systems back online, iZac rights the ship. We check the sensors – it looks like we’ve lost the ship that was following our course – they haven’t adjusted and are still heading to Saturn. The other two are still around Mars.
With the ship warming up, we decide to chat with Ki’ki. Ki’ki says the “Concierge” (crap) summoned her to Mars, but doesn’t seem to know why. She doesn’t remember getting into the cryo-chamber – last she remembers was that she was in the Deimos Rising cryo complex. And, says something kinda alarming/unsettling about a voice in her head?
Keeping up with the info gathering, Silas asks LB02 (Leya’s imprint in the ship) about the first thing she remembers. It isn’t much help though, as she seems mostly confused about that line of questioning.
Pretty soon, we’re in range of
skullfuckery spacemountain their base. We rotate our dish to narrow the comms beam so we don’t broadcast to all of space, and they give us coordinates to dock. Their weapons are locked on us, but this is to be expected. I mean, I’d do the same thing.
We land in the bay, and HOLY CRAP! Cabinless space motorcycles! Those are sooooooo cool!
Oh yeah, sorry about the shiny. So, there’s a dozen guys in the bay, armed to teeth. We all exit ship, unarmed as per their request. Time to be smooth, everyone.
