Where the demons dwell, where the banshees live and they do live well

Posted on March 22, 2017 in Iron Gods by dubtea

We settle in the barracks, and before resting I use Divination to speak to Sarenrae, to ask her about any weakness that this false god, Hellion, might have. She gives flashes of images which lead me to believe that the conflicts we’ve already encountered with him through the monitors pale to when we meet him physically. And I see that things we think he may be vulnerable to, like electricity, he isn’t. But, I also see that like others that we have encountered before, he too has Damage Resistance. Lastly, he seems to have something similar we’ve encountered before – hardness. Perhaps he’s encased in metal?

After resting, we open a small door. Kulgara! She throws something out the door towards us, and it explodes – some sort of modded plasma grenade that really, really hurts. It’s followed by a small fireball that also explodes, and hurts a lot, too. Jacques, instead of reeling in pain just starts laughing, and then drinks something. I don’t know what it was, but I know I don’t want to ever taste it, because it makes him vomit a swarm of wasps. On the other hand, I like my Kulgara like I like my coffee – COVERED IN BEES! They’re thankfully keeping her from getting her chainsaw sword going. 10LO plays some appropriate music to help boost the morale of the crew.

I move back to heal everyone else while they fight Kulgara, but keep her just out of range of Sarenrae’s Channel Positive Energy. We’re all attacking her, and Preston finishes her with crossbow, firing several bolts that leave her pinned to the wall as she dies. Aakpesh keeps her chainsaw sword. She’s wearing nice +1 breastplate, has a composite crossbow, 10 silverdiscs (10gp ea), 49gp, and a green access card that Jacques’ sharp eyes found.

While the rest of the party goes on a screen smashing spree, I take 10 to again ask Sarenrae a question, but about one of the two other remaining Lords of Rust other than Hellion – I flip a coin, and it’s Zagmaander. Again, through images I learn that Zagmaander is an outsider with all of benefits & drawbacks. She’s cut off from her home plane, cursed. I talk to 10LO, since he knows about the planes. He guesses that she’s from the NINE HELLS plane – the outer plane of lawful evil, where the devils doth dwell.

As we move further in the lair, we see a painting of her in cave – a red demon of sorts, with four arms. And right around the corner from that haunting mural – some machine banks that start belching out an acid fog. Aakpesh has a resistance to acid, so he carries me over, safely. But safety is not guarantee here, for as soon as we regroup, we’re attacked by Zagmaander herself!

My tactics/plan are immediately thrown out the window as she casts a spell on Aakpesh to ally him to her. This is bad, but thankfully I dispel the effects before he attacks us. He circles around her, making like he’s going to attack the biggest immediate threat to Zag – Vayu – but changes course at the last second, catching her off guard and injuring her badly. There’s some back and forth, and then Jacques drinks a potion of truestrike and lobs a grenade towards in such a way to minimize damage to the rest of the party, but somehow she partially dodges it. It matters not though, as she is quickly dropped afterwards. We find a laser torch, 2 jagged signature/recognizable long swords, and 2 mithral bracers (800gp ea). Unlike most outsiders though – she didn’t disappear after death. Remembering the creatures Marrow raised that we’ve fought against and not wanting to revisit creature, I remove curse (she had cursed flesh), and she fades away. He we are, purifiers of the Lair of the Blood Ghost.

Of the seven Lords of Rust, only two now remain:

  • Draigs The ettin Draigs wields two spiky chains with unnerving grace in combat. She’s the thug and executioner for the leadership-the one Hellion calls upon to mete out punishment to those who sin against Hellion.
  • Helskarg Killed at the entrance to the Lords’ lair.
  • Kulgara Killed in the Lords’ lair.
  • Meyanda Killed in Torch.
  • Nalakai Killed in the Lords’ lair.
  • Zagmaander Killed in the Lords’ lair.
  • Hellion Hellion is the lord and god of the Lords of Rust. Many have heard its voice or have seen its fiendish visage on the monitors found throughout the excavator, yet none can say they’ve seen Hellion in the flesh. Most believe Hellion to be a powerful fiend (a demon or devil), while others suspect it of being a Technic League agent using a fiend’s facade to sow fear. Others believe it to be an alien, the ghost of an ancient crew member from the Silver Mount, or even a trickster posing as a god. Possibly a trapped AI gone mad?
