We continue down the cavern, and I have an inkling to cast Trap Sense. Nothing (is yet) revealed to me as torchlight bounces off slimy walls. Jacques leaves a torch burning behind us, to hopefully burn off the acid fog that been inching its way towards us.
We come to what looks like a perfectly smooth stone wall. Vayu finds a secret door in it, and as I approach, my trap sense tingles – the door is holding up a ceiling trap. Jacques tries to disable it – and while he doesn’t fail, he doesn’t succeed. As a warning almost, things rumble but don’t fall. The ceiling is insecure, and the door remains shut. For now.
Jacques tries to pick the lock, and fails twice. On the second try, he even managed to wedge the pick in the lock. *sigh*
Out of apparent (safe/sane) options, I try to detect magic, and am rewarded: the door, lock, and ceiling are all magic! Illusion magic! Vayu effortlessly walks through door, and just to be safe, I say “NOCLIP” and walk through without a problem. We all do, actually, except Aakpesh. I think he may have stubbed his head earlier. Nonetheless, we all make it through.
I Channel Good to heal us up a bit, and we continue. Shortly, Aakpesh sees a cleft in wall, and with my darkvision, I can see that it opens to a small, easily defensible cavern. We squeeze through, and manage to rest.
When we wake, we learn that Ting! has replaced Jacques – it’s been a while. We head further down the corridor, and Vayu sees a glint – it’s a smooth metal wall, and the corridor opens up to it. In the middle is a 10ft high irised portal. We use the green access card, and the iris opens. 10LO sees two arcing sparks heading toward us, and before we can react, they both detonate.
*Roll for initiative*
Two familiar-looking sawhanded robots (we’ve fought these models before) close and hit 10LO. We hear an ominous stomping as Draigs steps into view. She drinks a potion, and seems to grin as she straightens up. Eight screens flicker on and three hologram circles light up. In one of the circles, a 12ft tall visage of Hellion appears.
“Last warning. Bow and swear fealty, and we’ll conquer world together.”
At this point I’m slightly surprised that Hellion thinks there’s any way we’ll agree to such terms. As Vayu castles with 10LO to get a better angle on these robots, I pat Aakpesh on the back while casting bull’s strength, and step back. Preston unleashes some arrows, and Aakpesh does what Aakpesh does – attacks with his terrible hammer.
Hellion casts something and there’s suddenly a shimmer in the opened doorway in front of us, like a wall of energy or magic. It doesn’t seem to affect the robots though, as they land attacks on Vayu. Draigs has two long spiked chains dangling from her hands, starts windmilling them, and snaps them out at Aakpesh at a furious speed, hitting him. If the existing enemies weren’t enough, all 8 screens start spewing only what I can assume is more of that acidic fog. I dispel the shimmering spell (which mostly likely would have been detrimental to us) and Vayu kills off the robots.
Having received his answer, Hellion says “so be it” and his hologram sinks down into the circle. On the other side of room, a large robot rumbles to life. Aakpesh swaps his hammer for the chainsaw sword and wastes no time closing on and working on Draigs with the weapon of her former fellow Lord of Rust.
There are so many things I want to do to help, spell-wise, but that’s all put on hold as I run in to heal a very hurt Aakpesh. Perhaps taking a note from me, Hellion shoots some sort of beam at Draigs, which seems to heal her? It’s for naught though as 10LO shoots the ettin, dropping her. It gives us a little breathing room but remember that we still have to kill some sort of god, encased in a metal spider body with a laser tail, clinging to the ceiling. Yeah.
Speaking of the metal spider encase laser shooting god (as though you’d forgotten), Hellion darts to the top right of the room, raises his scorpion tail, and shoots a plasma beam at me. OW. I return fire with two nonlethal Admonishing Ray beams.
*Man, we’re rolling like crap.*
10LO lets out some sort of directed ear piercing screams, dazing Hellion. I summon a Spiritual Ally, and have it start attacking Hellion, bypassing all sorts of protection he’s been enjoying.
Preston also takes this opportunity to hit Hellion a few times, dealing what appears to be quite a lot of damage, and the perhaps to prove some sort of odd point, shoots himself in the foot. At least he didn’t break his bowstring, again. Aakpesh works on Hellion with a double chainsaw attack, while Jacques closes and attacks while flanking Hellion, thanks to my spiritual ally. I close on Aakpesh, careful to keep him between Hellion and myself, and cast Badger’s Ferocity on the chainsaw sword.
Hellion just looks at one of his now-busted claws, shakes it, and it glows and repairs – dents pop out and the metal is smooth and all but now. Just as despair starts to set in, Vayu hits Hellion and he collapses. He starts glowing, and a building humming is inescapable. Hellion detonates, and a force wave passes though us, knocking us all out (even with a 27 save!).
I wake first, ears ringing and thanking Sarenrae to be alive. Hellion is nothing but a molten pile of scrap. Also, something’s not right – or just different? I feel strange. I plead to Sarenrae for insight, and learn that when Hellion exploded, some sort of divine essence exploded out of him and left something behind when passing through us. We each have gained 1 Mythic tier. In addition to our newfound powers, we find the equivalent of 108,000 gp.
The Lords of Rust are Dead. Long live the Lords of Rust.
